Finnsementti Oy is a Finnish cement industry company that has been involved in building Finland for 110 years. Finnsementti produces a significant share of Finland’s cement supply at its plants in Parainen and Lappeenranta. The company invests in the use of domestic raw materials and renewable fuels in its production.

When industrial processes involve the movement of large volumes of raw materials, precision and efficiency are everything. For Finnsementti, Finland’s leading cement manufacturer, the need for a modern, digital weighing solution became clear as they aimed to improve operational transparency and reliability at their Parainen factory. By adopting an integrated weighing service and automation system, they found a seamless way to boost both productivity and data accuracy.

A centralized approach to weighing and data flow

“Weighing solutions are an essential part of our business, as we handle more than 60,000 weighing transactions per year. Our equipment was outdated, so we decided to upgrade it in collaboration with Tamtron, says Petri Teräväinen Category Manager. Before the digital transformation, Finnsementti’s weighing operations involved manual steps and multiple disconnected systems. While functional, the setup made it difficult to monitor and optimize the material flow. Seeking a more efficient and future-proof solution, Finnsementti turned to Tamtron Group’s expertise in industrial weighing and automation.

Tamtron managed to solve challenges by digitalizing the weighing service, integrating the trucks scales into the cloud, and developing a modern automation system interface to Finnsementti’s existing automation systems. By choosing mScales’ cloud-based weighing service with automation system interface, Finnsementti was able to unify their processes under one digital ecosystem. This eliminated the need to coordinate between different vendors and systems – streamlining everything from weighing to data reporting.

Seamless integration across operations

The implementation covered multiple loading and weighing stations, all controlled through a centralized system that communicates directly with Finnsementti’s ERP. The new setup allows drivers to manage weighing independently via a user-friendly interface, reducing delays and minimizing manual input.

What makes this integration powerful is its scalability and flexibility. The system adapts to different operational needs, whether it’s inbound raw material deliveries or outbound shipments. Weighing events are recorded automatically, and data is available in real-time for production monitoring, logistics planning, and reporting.

Increased automation, reduced risk

One of the key benefits for Finnsementti has been the automation of routine tasks. With digital weighing, drivers no longer need to exit their vehicles, and operators can monitor workflows remotely. This not only improves safety but also ensures consistent results across all weighing operations.

Moreover, the risk of human error is significantly reduced. With the digital system, weighing data is captured automatically and transferred directly into Finnsementti’s back-end systems, eliminating the need for manual data entry and reducing the chance of discrepancies.

Collaboration that supports long-term development

The collaboration between Finnsementti and Tamtron was built on clear communication and a shared understanding of operational goals. Instead of offering a generic system, Tamtron tailored the solution to fit the plant’s specific requirements, ensuring long-term value and scalability.

With this new digital foundation in place, Finnsementti is now better positioned to further develop its weighing operations in the future. The system’s modularity allows for new features and integrations to be added as needs evolve – whether that means expanding to new sites or integrating with new digital services.
