Fortum promotes a cleaner future with Tamtron technology
Fortum, an international listed company, promotes change towards a cleaner world by providing its customers and society with clean energy and sustainable solutions. The demanding weighing and dosing technology delivered to the hydrometallurgical battery recycling plant in Harjavalta supports Fortum’s responsibility goals.
Battery recycling plant supports European self-sufficiency
Fortum has invested significantly in its battery business in recent years. The Harjavalta plant returns critical materials to European production, strengthening Europe’s self-sufficiency in battery materials. At the same time, Tamtron’s role as part of the Finnish and European battery industry value chain is growing.
Cooperation began with expert technology inquiries
Juha Immonen, Sales Manager at Tamtron, says that cooperation with Fortum began with interest sparked by references:
“At the beginning, there was a lull where we got to know each other and looked at the project needs. The discussion initially focused mainly on weighing, but we also presented big bag solutions. Fortum’s experts were good at asking the right questions about technology solutions.”
Battery recycling solutions on a tight schedule
As Fortum’s project progressed, the schedule became tighter, but Tamtron managed to meet the needs without delays: “We agreed on a reasonable delivery date. These scheduling challenges are typical in large industrial projects but can be overcome with good cooperation,” says Immonen.
He emphasizes that Tamtron’s involvement early in the project brings the most benefit to the customer: “We were able to offer consultative value by guiding technology choices and considering the bigger picture surrounding the project.”
Precise dosing and big bag management
As a result of the project, Fortum now uses Tamtron’s material receiving equipment to serve its hydrometallurgical battery recycling process. The solution enables high accuracy unloading of big bags and dosing of powdered additives.
“We provide receiving stations that suppliers can fill. This keeps the process efficient and controlled,” Immonen explains.
Focus on the growing battery recycling market
Fortum is an important customer and valuable reference for Tamtron, but the cooperation also offers new growth opportunities:
“Fortum’s importance in the battery recycling industry is growing; we want to be part of that growth. This project is part of Tamtron’s strategy to focus on the battery industry.”
